Celebrating growth and new possibilities: 36 women graduate from skills training courses

Last Thursday, May 14, was a day filled with pride and celebration at the Mother Assunta Training Centre, as 36 women graduated after successfully completing different vocational training courses offered through the Centre.

The graduation marked an important achievement for the women themselves, and also for the wider Bienvenu Shelter community, which continues to witness how access to practical skills and opportunity can help restore confidence and create new possibilities for migrant and refugee women rebuilding their lives in South Africa.

A total of 8 women graduated in Sewing, 11 women graduated in Nails, 12 graduated in Make-Up, and 5 women graduated in Hairdressing.

Throughout the ceremony, the atmosphere was joyful and deeply meaningful. Family members, staff, teachers and fellow participants gathered to celebrate the dedication and commitment each woman showed during the months of training.

At the same time, the ceremony also reflected some of the uncertainties currently affecting many migrant communities across Johannesburg. In recent weeks, a difficult social climate has left some women feeling unsafe or anxious about moving freely around the city. For this reason, a few graduates were unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony in person. Their absence was deeply felt, and the celebration also became a quiet reminder of the everyday challenges many migrant and refugee women continue to navigate while trying to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

For many of the graduates, the journey toward completing these courses was not always easy. Many women attending the Training Centre are migrant and refugee women who face daily challenges linked to documentation, unemployment, financial insecurity, language barriers and social isolation. Despite these difficulties, they continued showing up, learning new skills, supporting one another and believing in the possibility of building something for themselves and for their children.

At Bienvenu Shelter, skills training is never only about learning a technical skill. It is also about rebuilding self-esteem and creating pathways toward independence and economic inclusion. Courses such as sewing, beauty care, baking, make-up, computer and hairdressing can become an important source of income generation, helping women move closer toward stability.

We are incredibly proud of all graduates and grateful to everyone who continues supporting the mission of the Bienvenu Shelter. We wish all the graduates strength and success for the next chapter of their journey and hope that the skills acquired during these months may continue opening doors and inspiring confidence in the future ahead.
