Bridging identities: Supporting the mental health needs of our children

Bienvenu Shelter, in collaboration with REPSSI, launched a 12-week community program targeting migrant mothers, caregivers, and guardians. The project is called “Bridging identities: Supporting the mental health needs of our children.” It aims to provide community members with parenting skills as migrant parents raising children in the South African society. It will run for twelve weeks from 8th September 2026 to 4th December 2026. The dialogues happen every Friday from 9 am to 11 am at Mother Assunta Training Centre, Kensington. A group of 30 women are attending the sessions.

These community dialogues were started because we realized that there is often a disconnect between migrant parents and their children. Since migrant parents have been raised in diverse culture from which their children are growing up in families experience a breakdown in communication, guidance, roles, and responsibilities, etc. By the end of the twelve weeks, participants should be able to support the mental health needs of their children and improve parent-child communication and guidance.
