Bienvenu Shelter Holds 2026 Annual General Meeting

On 25 June 2026, Bienvenu Shelter successfully convened its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Mother Assunta Training Center, a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to serving Migrant and Refugee Women and their Children and vulnerable communities. The gathering brought together board members, staff, and partners, united by a shared mission of compassion.

Opening and Greetings – The meeting began with prayer and words of welcome from the Chairperson of the Board, setting a tone of unity and hope. A letter from the Scalabrinian Sisters Provincial Superior was read aloud, offering blessings and heartfelt appreciation for the Shelter’s tireless work over the years.

Chairperson’s Address – In his address, the Chairperson expressed gratitude to the Bienvenu team, who daily confront both the challenges and triumphs of their mission. He acknowledged the difficult climate created by anti migrant movements, reminding attendees that such disruption does not reflect the true spirit of the country. He urged Bienvenu Shelter to continue building strong partnerships with Local Organisations and Government departments willing to protect the most vulnerable. His words echoed the legacy of St. Scalabrini, himself a migrant, who dedicated his life to walking alongside those in need ‘migrant with migrants’.

Financial Overview – The Treasurer presented the audited financial statements for 2025. Revenue declined slightly, while operating costs rose. Despite these challenges, the balance sheet remains stable. The Treasurer emphasized the importance of forward looking strategies to safeguard the Shelter’s long-term sustainability.

Operational Achievements – The Management Report highlighted the Shelter’s remarkable impact in 2025: 95 mothers and 110 children from 16 countries welcomed into the shelter. 261 women trained at Mother Assunta Training Centre, with 193 graduates. 85 children enrolled in the Creche, with 12 successfully placed in schools. Outreach assistance provided to 17,507 families, indirectly supporting nearly 80,000 people. The year also saw the establishment of a safeguarding office, the development of a safeguarding policy, and staff training to ensure confidentiality and protection. Notable milestones included the organisation’s new PBO number, the completion of a kitchen for the Creche, and visits from Cardinal Michael Czerny of the Vatican and His Eminence Cardinal Brislin, Archbishop of Johannesburg — affirmations of Bienvenu Shelter’s vital role in the global mission of human dignity.

Challenges for the Organisation – The Shelter itself encountered difficulties that tested its operations and staff: Exposure to trauma: Staff and volunteers are continually confronted with distressing situations, impacting their wellbeing. Electricity shortages disrupted daily activities and service delivery. Targeted criminality in the area posed risks to safety and security. Location related safety concerns made it harder to guarantee a secure environment for beneficiaries and staff.

Board and Auditor Updates – RS Baard Chartered Accountant SA (CASA) was reappointed as Auditing Company, with thanks expressed for his continued support. Following the saddening passing of board member Mr. Johan Viljoen, who will be deeply missed. Estelle Trengove joined the Board, to bring new light and fresh ideas.

Closing Reflections – Pastoral Care for Migrants and Refugees from the Archdiocese of Johannesburg representatives offered words of encouragement, urging perseverance in difficult times. Discussions highlighted the urgent need for advocacy around migrant documentation, a barrier that prevents many from accessing essential services.

The AGM concluded with heartfelt thanks, blessings, and renewed determination to continue serving those in need. The Chairperson closed with prayer, affirming that Bienvenu Shelter’s mission remains rooted in faith, resilience, and the unwavering belief that every person deserves dignity and care.
