“I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matt 25:35)

Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ, shares his testimony from his visit to Bienvenu Shelter

On 29 September 2025, the Bienvenu Shelter was blessed to welcome His Eminence Cardinal Michael Felix Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

During his visit, Cardinal Czerny expressed deep appreciation for the work carried out by the Scalabrinian Sisters along with their team, stating that “The Bienvenu Shelter and the Mother Assunta Training Centre are concrete examples of your commitment to your vocation. In fact, these initiatives form part of what we can call ‘good practice’ and need to be shared with other local Churches.”

Very good feedback was received from the Prefect of the Dicastery which we all are very thankful for his words. Cardinal Czerny’s profound testimony and presence were a powerful reminder of the Church’s mission to live out the Gospel through solidarity, compassion, and justice, especially towards migrant and refugee women and their children.

Walking with migrants and refugees is not just a gesture of solidarity, but a choice of faith. In following the charism of Saint Scalabrini, we continue following the call to be a sign of hope and make visible the compassionate face of Christ, to continue caring for our brothers and sisters fleeing and seeking refuge, living far from their homeland and dreaming of living in peace in South Africa, a country where there is forever hope for a better life.
